Message from Animal Control Re: Cat Trapping
Notice Regarding Live Trapping Cats
We have seen an increase in people purchasing or borrowing live traps, catching cats on their own, and expecting Animal Control to pick up the animal. This needs to stop.
Animal Control is not responsible for monitoring or responding to privately set live traps. We will not attend to collect trapped animals from private traps.
Anyone who chooses to set a live trap without first making arrangements with Animal Control will be responsible for the animal’s care and safe transport. You will be required to make an appointment and bring the animal directly to the shelter.
Under Manitoba’s Animal Care Act, anyone in possession or control of an animal has a legal duty to provide for its welfare. A live trap is intended for short-term use only and cannot be used as housing.
Cats must not be left in traps for extended periods or exposed to weather conditions. If an animal is confined, it must be provided with appropriate shelter, food, water, and access to a litter box until it can be transported.
Failure to meet these requirements may result in enforcement under the Animal Care Act and/or municipal bylaws.
If you believe a cat needs to be trapped, contact Animal Control first so appropriate arrangements can be made.
Sincerely,
Wendy Petersen, Animal Control Officer
